Fascinating Folkestone insights: MP’s visit

Folkestone & Hythe MP Damian Collins visited the East Cliff excavation site on Monday 11 September to catch up with ATU’s progress.

“This project has uncovered new and fascinating insights into Folkestone’s history and relationships with the continent,” he said. “I hope we can build on this achievement and make that story accessible to local people.”

Mr Collins, who had visited the site during last summer’s excavation, is pictured holding a Roman hare brooch found on the site in August.

Finds Manager Dr Andrew Richardson said: “We’re delighted to have the support of Folkestone’s MP and grateful that he was able to make the time to come here again.”

Project Director Dr Lesley Hardy, of Canterbury Christ Church University, said support for the project was important as it entered a new phase of interpretation and analysis. “We’ve uncovered a story of the history of the town that we hadn’t anticipated,” she said.

“The next phase of the project is going to be about understanding that information.”

Volunteers are still welcome: contact ATU for details.
