Site Supervisor’s excavation diary – week twelve (October 17th to 23rd, 2010)
Sunday 17th October. KP, AR and 9 volunteers
Completed excavation work in both Trench 1 and the North-East area. Continued digging below Rooms 50 and 51. Did finds washing on site. Final site tour for local residents (attended by 19). Dry all day (just).
Monday 18th October. KP, BC, RH, MG and 7 volunteers
Completed recording work in Trench 1 and started to back-fill. Completed excavation work and most of the recording in the North-East area. Visit from around 30 school children in the morning. Did finds washing on site. Dry all day.
Tuesday 19th October. KP, BC, RH and 5 volunteers
Continued back-filling Trench 1. Drew sections in Room 50. Took final photos of the North-East area. Site visit from Chris Butler (Sussex archaeologist) who briefly looked at some of the flintwork recovered – confirmed the presence of Mesolithic material on the site. Showers p.m.
Wednesday 20th October. KP, BC, RH and 5 volunteers
Continued back-filling Trench 1. Continued digging and recording in Room 50. Dry and sunny all day, but cold. RH checked paperwork relating to the North-East area. Site visit p.m. from two unhappy locals who complained about every aspect of the excavation (including the 1989 dig!)
Thursday 21st October. KP, BC, RH and 10 volunteers
Completed back-filling in Trench 1. Continued digging below Rooms 50 and 51. Continued planning the villa walls. Dry and sunny all day after a cold start.
Friday 22nd October. KP, BC, RH and 3 volunteers
Completed paper work relating to the North-East area – took photos. Drew a section across the villa corridor wall. Continued digging below Room 50. Continued back-filling with ash.
Saturday 23rd October. KP and 6 volunteers
Continued digging below Room 50 – now almost complete. Started back-filling the North-East area with ash. Took levels but rained off at 4.40.
