Site Supervisor’s excavation diary – week ten (October 3rd to 9th, 2010)

Sunday 3rd October.  KP, AR, LH and 15 volunteers

     Continued digging early clay deposits below Rooms 52 and 53.  Did finds washing on site.  Rained off at 2:15.  Wrote report on progress and e-mailed it to ATU staff.

Monday 4th October.  KP, BC and 8 volunteers

     Site very wet from yesterday.  Recorded and photographed details of villa corridor wall then started to back-fill it.  Continued digging below  Room 53.  More pre-historic flints recovered.  Did finds washing on site.  Site visit from David Tomalin (Isle of Wight archaeologist).  Dry all day. 

Tuesday 5th October.  KP, BC and 8 volunteers

     Continued digging early clay in Room 53 – rained off at 12:40.  Continued finds washing on site.  KP did video conference on site at the local school.  Continued working on field records p.m.

Wednesday 6th October.  KP, BC and 4 volunteers

     Rain all morning – too wet to dig.  Did finds washing and paper work all day.  Site visit from AR.

Thursday 7th October.  KP, BC, RH and 14 volunteers

     Dry all day.  Continued digging in the North-East area.  Back filled villa corridor wall.  BC continued working on the site plans.  KP wrote notes.   Did finds washing on site.

Friday 8th October.  KP, BC, RH and 7 volunteers

     Dry all day – even sunny p.m.  Continued digging in the North-East area.  Continued digging below Room 50.  Continued planning Roman walls and sorting out structural details.  Took photographs and soil samples. 

Saturday 9th October.  KP, BC, PB and 15 volunteers

     Continued digging the North-East area.  Continued digging below Room 50.  Recorded details of walls in Rooms 52 and 53.  Did finds washing on site.  Borrowed tent collected by the Scouts.   Dry all day.
