Site Supervisor’s excavation diary – week seven (September 12th to 18th, 2010)

Sunday 12th September.  KP, PB and 25 volunteers

Continued digging early clay deposits in Room 51.  Took photos of early chalk floors in Rooms 52 and 53.  Continued work in the North-East area, took photographs and drew plans.  Did finds washing on site.  Visit from Dr John Williams (retired County Archaeologist).  Fine, dry and sunny all day.

Monday 13th September.  KP, BC, RH, 4 CAT diggers and 12 volunteers

Excavated early chalk floor in Rooms 52 and 53.  Continued digging in the North-East area.  Continued work in Trench 1.  Did finds washing on site.

Tuesday 14th September.  KP, BC, RH, 2 CAT Diggers, MG and 14 volunteers

Continued digging below Rooms 52 and 53.  Continued digging in the North-East area.  Did finds washing on site.  Cloudy and cold all day – but no rain.

Wednesday 15th September.  KP, BC, RH, 3 CAT Diggers and 17 volunteers

Continued digging the North-East area.  Continued digging below Rooms 52 and 53.  Did finds washing on site.  Drew sections across the early stone drain.   Site visit from PB (Canterbury Trust Director) and Alison McQuad (English Heritage Inspector).   Left site at 5.30.  Dry all day.

Thursday 16th September.  KP, BC, RH, 3 CAT Diggers and 15 volunteers

Continued digging in the North-East area.  Continued digging below Rooms 51, 52 and 53.  Visit from the local primary school.  BC planned the villa walls.  At 7pm KP gave a talk on the villa excavations at Folkestone University Centre (attended by 65).

Friday 17th September.  KP, BC, RH, 4 CAT Diggers and 18 volunteers. 

Continued digging in the North-East area.  Continued digging below Rooms 51 and 52.  Drew small sections.  Visit from local MP, Damian Collins, and local artist Ken Fisher.  Did finds washing on site.  Dry all day after overnight rain. 

Saturday 18th September.  KP, PB, AR and 20 volunteers

Continued digging in the North-East area.  Continued digging below Rooms 51, 52 and 53.  Took photos of chalk floor below Room 53.   Continued digging in Trench 1.  Gave a site tour for local residents.
