Site Supervisor’s excavation diary – week nine (September 26th to October 2nd, 2010)

Sunday 26th September.  KP, RH and 16 volunteers

     Continued digging below Rooms 52 and 53.  Continued digging in the North-East area.  Photographed chalk floor in Room 50 and removed it.  Diggers rained off at 2.15 but did finds washing on site a.m.  Site visit from Council for British Archaeology (SE) conference members.  Rained all afternoon – abandoned site at 3.45 – fed up. 

Monday 27th September.   KP, BC, RH, MG and 20 volunteers

     Continued digging in the North-East area, Rooms 52 and 53 – but site very wet from previous day’s rain.  Added details to measured sections.  Took levels.  Did finds washing on site.  School visits in afternoon.  Dry all day.

Tuesday 28th September.  KP, BC, RH, MG and 13 volunteers

     Continued work in Trench 1.  Continued digging in the North-East area.   Continued digging below Rooms 52 and 53.   Site visit from Alan Ward (Christchurch University).   School parties taken round site all day.  Dry but cloudy.

Wednesday 29th September.  KP, BC, RH, MG and 7 volunteers

     Light rain a.m. which delayed the start of digging until lunch time.  Continued digging in the North-East area, Room 53 and outside Room 51.   Added details to sections.   Did finds washing on site all day.  School visits in morning.

Thursday 30th September.  KP, BC, RH, MG and 15 volunteers

     Continued digging in the North-East area, Rooms 52 and 53.  Drew section and took photographs.  School visits a.m.  Did finds washing on site.  Dry all day. 

Friday 1st October.  KP, BC, RH, MG and 6 volunteers

     Continued digging in the North-East area; also below Rooms 53 and 50.  Continued digging in Trench 1.  Drew a small section.  School visits a.m. also Dr Steve Willis (University of Kent) with some of his students (and more buns).  Did finds washing on site.  Rain and a gale blew up lunch time – took down the tent and abandoned site at 2:30 – we cannot now afford to loose too much more time to the weather.

Saturday 2nd October.  KP, PB and 19 volunteers

     Dug early clay deposits below Rooms 52 and 53.  Did finds washing on site.  Site now very wet from previous days rain.  Dry all day (just).
