Site Supervisor’s excavation diary – week eight (September 19th to 25th, 2010)

Sunday 19th September.  KP, PB, MG and 17 volunteers

Continued digging in the North-East area.  Drew plans and took photos.  Continued digging within Rooms 50, 51, 52 and 53.  Reached the natural clay in Room 51 (at last).  Did finds washing on site.  Many visitors.  Dry all day. 

Monday 20th September.  KP, BC, RH, MG and 17 volunteers 

      Continued in the North-East area (AM only).   Continued digging below Rooms 52 and 53.  Planned early features exposed.  Also continued digging in Trench 1.  Did finds washing on site.  Site visit from Dr Steve Willis (University of Kent) – he kindly brought biscuits and buns for the diggers but really came to see the Roman pottery we were finding. Dry all day but windy.

Tuesday 21st September.  KP, BC, RH and 19 volunteers.

     Cleaned chalk floor in the North-East area.  Continued digging in Trench 1.  Drew a section and added to plans.  Continued digging in Rooms 52 and 53.   Did finds washing on site.  Official site visit from Roger De Haan and his colleagues (with PB, AR and LH).  Dry and sunny all day – a fine day.

Wednesday 22nd September.  KP, BC, MG, RH and 18 volunteers

     Continued digging in Trench 1 and the North-East area.  Continued digging below Rooms 52 and 53.  Drew two long sections across Rooms 50 and 51.   Drew smaller sections and took photos.

Thursday 23rd September.  KP, RC, RH, MG and 18 volunteers

     Continued digging in the North-East area as well as in Rooms 51, 52 and 53.  Took photographs and environmental samples.  School visits all day.  Dry but cloudy.

Friday 24th September.  KP, BC, RH and 14 volunteers

     Continued digging in Trench 1.   Also continued digging in the North-East area and below Room 53.  Drew a plan.   Did finds washing on site.  Heavy rain at 3.30 – finished early.

Saturday 25th September.  KP, BC, PB, 13 volunteers

     Continued digging below Rooms 50, 52 and 53.  Drew small sections and continued planning the site.  Took photographs and levels.  Did finds washing on site.  Dry all day but very windy.
