Excerpt from Site Supervisor’s excavation diary – 5th – 10th September 2010

Day 37 – Sunday 5th September 2010

KP, RH + 19 volunteers. Continued digging NE area. Made small extension to trench 1. Took more photos of villa walls. Revealed chalk floors below room 50. Did site tour for diggers. Did finds washing on site. Dry all day.

Day 38 – Monday 6th September 2010

KP, BC, RH + 18 volunteers. Continued digging NE area. Excavated first stratified deposits in base of rooms 50, 52, 53 – chalk floors revealed. Did finds washing on site. Rained off at 3.00pm. BC started main stie plan of villa walls.

Day 39 – Tuesday 7th September 2010

KP, BC, RH + 12 volunteers. Continued digging NE area. Continued digging stratified deposits in rooms 52 and 53 – early chalk floors exposed. Filled sand bags to make access steps into dig. Did finds washing on site. Dry and sunny all day after rain previous night. Continued digging in trench 1. Site getting very complex.

Day 40 – Wednesday 8th September 2010

KP, BC, RH + 6 volunteers. Steady rain all morning – did paper work and finds washing. Dug in NE area p.m. – most of site too wet to dig.

Day 41 – Thursday 9th September 2010

KP, BC, RH + 10 volunteers. Site damp from overnight rain but workable. Continued revealing chalk floors below villa. Continued work on NE area. Did finds washing on site. Visit from friends of CAT at 2pm. Site visit from AR. Dry and sunny all day. Drew three sections.

Day 42 – Friday 10th September 2010

KP, BC, RH + 29 volunteers. Site too wet to work after over night rain. Worked on NE area (covered). Examined structural details in rooms 50 + 52. Pm excavated early deposits.
